Secrets To Model Railroads
A good number of model train enthusiasts have a limited look at their layouts. They solely see what they’re happy with and can’t seem to understand the faults that make other layouts appear superior as compared with their own. In the following paragraphs I’m going to tell you the key to making your scale model train layout the best it can be.
The real solution to creating a scale model train layout that appears realistic and impressive to others is perspective. Not the type of perspective that people use for making artificial depth in your layout but instead the perspective that the model railroader requires with regard to how he sees his layout when compared to the real life. To actually make a great layout you’ll need to be capable of view different elements inside your layout as they compare to the outside world.
The basic model train components that you need to evaluate are your locomotives, your landscaping, your structures, your people and your roads. Each one of these elements possesses key features about it in the real world that we sometimes forget to carry over in our layouts. We’ll look at these one at a time.
1. Trains – Review your trains and think about how locomotives as well as rolling stock can be found in real life. First of all, they are certainly not the spotless pieces of equipment that a lot of layouts would indicate. Everybody knows about weathering however lots of modelers have an abnormal anxiety about doing anything to their trains that might lower their valuation. Why?
Think you’re truly going to sell them off at some point? Whose enjoyment exactly did you buy them for? Weather away. Make the most satisfaction from your trains by simply making the most authentic trains you could have. I even go beyond just weathering and actually will break off or bend a few pieces here and there. In the real world trains are used and get stressed.
2. Scenery – Does your landscape look like real life? Take the opportunity and walk outdoors. Exactly what do you observe when you browse around your community. You know what I see? I notice how the forest tower over all the structures. You will find bare areas in the your lawn. You will find wet spots where puddles seem to constantly form. The creeks and streams have trees and shrubs which may have fallen over into them. The bushes are not perfect in front of every property.
3. Buildings – The most apparent thing with regards to structures is weathering, but in real life nearly all structures actually look fairly new for most of their lives. What they are though is messy. Motorcycles are stored on back porches. Waste cans can be found behind or beside every building in the real world. A motor vehicle repair shop will have tons of extra parts sitting around outside that they simply do not know what to do with. Every single manufacturing facility has tons of junk leaning up against the building in areas that the general public isn’t going to notice.
4. People – What do people go about doing in the real world? They hang up laundry in the back yard. Young men hang out in groups on the corner. Individuals sit down and wait on walls and curbs, not only park benches. They bring bags with them while they shop in town. When you’re in your car take note to what you observe people doing outside along your way. What do you observe people engaging in within your town? Reproduce these types of behaviors in your layout.
5. Roads – In the real world painted lines fade. The blacktop deviates in hues of grey or black. Accidents happen. Appliances get thrown out along the sides of less traveled roads. Vehicles break down along the streets. These are genuine things which you observe in the real world. Motor vehicles have dents and dings and rust. You get the picture.
As you have seen, creating some detailed modifications will add a feeling of realism that will help make your model train layout stand above other layouts and give you increased enjoyment. Best of all, these details can be added to established layouts, they do not necessarily require that you start any of your layout over.
